Nord & Süd is a business magazine, born out of the needs of South Tyrol’s location development agency (BLS). Lupo Burtscher together with the designer Christian Hoffelner (CH Studio) and the copywriting agency ExLibris developed the idea and the concept of Nord & Süd and curated and designed the annual magazine between 2012 and 2015.
How can one make a region and its multifarious economy stand out internationally? With excellent features by authors, journalists, photographers and artists from both within the region and outside of it, and a well-thought-out design. The regional economy is thereby portrayed in relation to a larger whole: high quality journalism which takes an international perspective whilst still investing in regional affairs.
The editorial team is supported by an editor in chief, who is appointed every year according to the thematic focus of each particular edition. All texts, photos and graphics are original and produced especially for the magazine. The magazine is published annually and the visual design changes so that each edition is unique whilst still allowing for continuity across the series. The basic grid remains the same in every edition (single, double or triple column pages depending on the nature of the text), but it is adapted every year in terms of typography, colour and design of the opening pages, with the photographic concept changing as well. The magazine’s high recognition value is also emphasised through its content, where particular columns and contributions are featured in every edition. For example, every edition of the magazine opens with an opinion piece by a well-known personality from the field which is the focus of that particular edition, or “traverses” the region with a photo gallery centred on a particular theme, contour line or road. The centre spread is left free for artists and designers to develop a concept. These recurring elements are identifiable within the magazine through visual elements.
