In 2013, Italy’s largest fine paper manufacturer, Fedrigoni, with its headquarters in Verona, decided to give its Splendorgel paper a glitzy appearance. For its book of samples, Fedrigoni invites a variety of international graphic designers to present their range of paper-types: Theme and story are an interpretative space for every design studio. For the Splendorgel paper Lupo Burtscher created a colourful book of samples full of surprises.
The information that needed to be conveyed, such as different paper thicknesses, print-types and paper processing methods, was made tangible through a central element: The bicycle. 68 pages interweave design, photography, literature and visual art around this never-out-of-fashion mode of transport. In order to create the visual image of a fan, the page width was gradually increased. Its playful feel, combined with the experiments with paper and print, as well as the bike-related stories, resulted in a dynamic and interdisciplinary Splendorgel experience.
